It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally back open! We’ve had a good few weeks easing back into business-as-usual, and we’ve absolutely loved welcoming back our customers. After so long stuck inside, there’s nothing like getting back outdoors for fresh air and off-road, adventurous FUN.
But maybe you haven’t had the chance to visit us for a while, or perhaps you’d yet to visit before the lockdowns were even implemented. Maybe you’re a local itching to do something different outdoors, or you’re looking to book a holiday and you’re browsing things to do in North Devon. We thought we’d take the chance to introduce ourselves.
Who we are
So welcome to Keypitts! We’re an off-road activity centre near Ilfracombe in beautiful North Devon.
We’ve been running for over 20 years now, providing a space for people to do things they might not normally do. We offer unique outdoor adventures that you just can’t find anywhere else, and awesome off-road experiences for skills hard to learn elsewhere. All at the hands of our talented instructors.
We started out as a family run farm, where we privately enjoyed the same activities that we offer today. Back in 1998, we diversified to begin offering these kinds of activities to the public, before developing into a well-established business with far more capacity to enable people to have fun and learn these same skills in a safe, fun location.
We’re not afraid of a little mud here, and we’re proud to be an all-weather attraction. In fact, our motto has always been the wetter, the BETTER! Make sure you bring your welly boots, and you’ll be all set.
Where we are
Our location is hands down one of the best things about Keypitts – after all, we started out as a farm. North Devon is one of the most beautiful places in the country, and we get to make the very best of it, with over 200 acres of woodland, tracks, trails, and open fields. The views are pretty insane – on good days, you can see all the way out to Wales – and there’s a ton of scenic beauty on the site itself, too.
We’re lucky, because within those 200 acres is a hugely diverse terrain. It’s this huge mix of different landscapes all in one location that gives us the capability to offer the fun, different days out we pride ourselves on.
If you’re based in or visiting North Devon, it’s easy to visit us. We’re located near Ilfracombe, but we’re also fairly close to and easily accessed from Woolacombe, Croyde, Lynton and Lynmouth.
What we offer:
Here at Keypitts, we have three main activities on offer: quad biking, axe throwing, and a Land Rover experience. Depending on the activity, there are a range of options to accommodate for a wide variety of different groups, whether that be families or friends. Either way, they’re guaranteed to get you doing something different.
Quad biking is an awesome way to get outdoors, and what’s more, it’s suitable for everyone! This is a great chance to test yourself on that diverse landscape we talked about; the terrain across the site ranges from gentle and scenic to fairly challenging, so you’re able to pick a ride that suits you, or work your way up as you build confidence.
We’ve got different trails to suit different age groups and abilities. Starting from the Badger Run, an inflatable track for 6-7 year olds to learn the basics, to the Novice Ride on the farm for any new starters and those aged 8 or above, this progresses up to the Skill Ride. Suitable for those over the age of 10 who have completed the prior course, the terrain will become a bit more challenging. Then, finally, if you’ve proved yourself on both the Novice and Skill rides, you can take on the Superskill Ride – this is where you’ll need to get brave, and is definitely not for the faint of heart!
We know that for many, this will be an entirely new set of skills to learn, but there’s no need to worry. When quad biking with us, you’ll receive a full and comprehensive safety briefing from an instructor, as well as full training and tuition. If you do need any extra guidance, our instructors will be on-hand and with you throughout your ride.
4×4 Land Rover Experience
Have you ever wanted to learn to drive off-road? Well, now you can! This is a hugely cool skill to learn, and we love being able to share it via our 4×4 Land Rover Experience.
The Land Rover Discovery is hands down the best kind of vehicle to do this with, and that’s exactly what we have on offer. Led by our instructors – talented and experienced off-road drivers themselves – you’ll undertake a 30-45 minute journey across all 200 acres of our farm. The further you progress, the more difficult it’ll become as you delve into more diverse and challenging terrain, though you will have received full training from an instructor beforehand.
Obviously, you’ll require a full driving license to be able to drive – but if nobody in your group has their license and you still want the experience, that’s completely fine. One of our instructors can drive and you can come along for the ride.
Finally, axe throwing – probably not an activity you’d expect to find here in North Devon, but something you absolutely should consider. This is fantastic for practicing your aim and bringing out your competitive side (we even have a points system so you can track your score and compare with the rest of your group.)
Don’t be fooled, this is not just about throwing an axe blindly and hoping for the best; we have professional throwing axes, as well as marked targets which are designed to become harder as you go along.
It’s an experience to tick off the bucket list… even if you might not have realised it was ever on there to begin with. These sessions are fairly short and quick, so it’s an ideal extra to add onto your day out quad biking or off-road driving.
It’s so good to be back open after all this time, and we’ve definitely got a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, we’re open all year – rain or shine. And while we do have several changes on-site in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines, we’re dedicated to ensuring that you and your group have the best experience possible.
So, hopefully, we’ll see you soon! If you’re interested in visiting, all of our activities are bookable via the website. You can give us a call too, though please do bear in mind that signal out here isn’t always the best. It’s the one problem with the North Devon countryside… although those views and scenic routes do ultimately make up for it.
